Desktop Publisher
Desktop Publishers use a computer to prepare material for printing. This process may include typesetting, image assembly, manipulating graphics, doing design and layout, and preparing computer files.
What you would do:
- receive material from clients to design or lay out for printing
- input and set out text
- scan and set out graphics
- check the text and layout meet printing requirements
- proof-read text
- send proofs to clients for approval
- prepare computer files for printing onto film or directly onto plates
- send the files to a printer
- keep up to date with new versions of computer software.
You need to be:
- knowledgeable of the design requirements for print, including fonts and typography, layout, colour separation and design
- understanding of the different printing processes and production methods
- knowledgeable of design and graphics software
- a goog communicator
- a person with good writing skills
- a person with good organisational skills
- a person with good problem-solving skills
- a person with good decision-making skills
- accurate, with an eye for detail
- patient and able to work well under pressure and unsupervised
Desktop Publishers need to have normal colour vision.
You will require:
There are no specific requirements to become a desktop publisher, although many people enter this job after completing a tertiary course in graphic design like the Certificate II in Printing and Graphic Arts (Desktop Publishing). However skills are learned on the job through experience, workshops or courses.
