IT Support Officer

IT support officers monitor and maintain the computer systems and networks of an organisation. They install and configure computer systems, diagnose hardware/software faults and solve technical problems, either over the phone or face-to-face.

  

What you would do:

  • install and configure computer systems
  • monitor and maintain computer systems and networks
  • talk staff/clients through a series of actions - either face-to-face or over the telephone
  • troubleshoot system and network problems and diagnose and solve hardware/software faults
  • find solutions to problems, be it through creating a desktop short cut or fixing a major fault on the operating system
  • replace parts
  • provide support documentation, including procedural documentation
  • follow diagrams and written instructions to repair a fault or set up a system
  • run network applications to support system and users
  • support new applications
  • set up new users
  • respond within agreed time limits to call-outs
  • work continuously on a task until completion (or referral to third parties, if appropriate)
  • prioritise and manage several open cases at one time
  • rapidly establish a good working relationship with strangers in their premises to make necessary repairs (contract businesses)
  • test/evaluate new technology
  • conduct electrical safety checks on computer equipment

You need to be:

  • able to think logically 
  • knowledgeable of how software and operating systems work
  • an excellent listener with questioning skills to interact confidently with clients to establish what the problem is and explain the solution
  • focused on customer needs
  • patient
  • of technical orientation and interest
  • attentive to detail

You will require:

  • Certificate IV in Information Technology
  • Drivers Licence

Improve your chances by:

  • taking IT Studies, English, maths, or business studies subjects

  • having good typing skills

What you will earn:

Salaries generally range between $36,000 and 48,000 depending on experience.
